Ingredients

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

1 tbsp ground cinnamon

¼ tsp ground nutmeg

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup brown sugar, packed

2 large eggs

½ cup unsweetened applesauce

¼ cup vegetable oil

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup finely diced apples (preferably Granny Smith)

¼ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

For the Cinnamon Sugar Topping:

¼ cup granulated sugar

1 tsp ground cinnamon

2 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan with non-stick spray or butter.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined. Set aside.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, beat together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and eggs until smooth. Add the applesauce, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract, mixing until fully incorporated.

Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. Fold in the diced apples and nuts, if using.

Fill the Donut Pan: Spoon the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about ¾ of the way full. Use a piping bag or a ziplock bag with a corner snipped off for easier filling.

Bake the Donuts: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the edges are golden.

Prepare Cinnamon Sugar Topping: While the donuts are baking, mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl.

Coat the Donuts: Once baked, remove the donuts from the oven and let them cool in the pan for about 5 minutes. Carefully take them out and place on a wire rack. While they’re still warm, brush the tops with melted butter and dip them into the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.

Serve and Enjoy: Allow the donuts to cool slightly before devouring them. Best served warm with a cup of coffee or cider!
